Lot 67
Pre-Columbian, Andean Region, Tiahuanaco, ca. 500 to 900 CE; Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE; Nicoya, ca. 800 to 1350 CE. A group of three pre-Columbian pottery vessels representing ceramic traditions from the Andean highlands and Central America. The earliest is a Tiahuanaco lobed jar, its segmented, melon-like body rising toward a slightly flaring rim. Twin strap handles emerge from the upper walls, and the surface retains subtle traces of red, black, and cream pigments characteristic of Andean polychrome styles. The Costa Rican zoomorphic tripod jar features a rounded body supported on three conical legs, with small animal-head projections marking the upper register. Painted geometric bands wrap around the vessel, their softened red and black lines attesting to age and long burial. Size of largest: 5.5" Diameter x 4.5" H (14 cm x 11.4 cm)
The largest vessel is a Nicoya jar, its broad spherical body narrowing to a short, wide mouth. The warm orange-brown surface preserves faint remnants of painted decoration, consistent with Nicoya ceramic traditions known for balanced proportions and finely prepared clay. Together, the three vessels highlight the diversity of form, surface treatment, and regional identity across pre-Columbian ceramic production from the high Andes to the Pacific lowlands.
