Description:

Costa Rican, but found in Panama, ca. 300 to 700 CE. This tripod spider-legged jar, indicative of the style of a little-known Costa Rican culture, has saurian decorations on its legs and and rounded, high-relief geometric designs around the neck. It also has spiral-shaped handles. This style of jar is sometimes referred to as a “cocoa cup”, and may have been used to hold the traditional drink. Its legs originally would have contained materials to make them rattle when shaken. Size: 6-1/2”L x 6-1/2”W x 6-3/4”H. Provenance: Ex-private Rousseau collection acquired before 1984. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108860

  • Condition: Minor scratching to the interior neck and lip but no signs of repair to the body of the bowl. The decoration has minor wear. One leg has been reattached. One leg is missing a part of its decoration, and another leg has its foot chipped off, but the legs are able to support the bowl and it is freestanding. The leg rattles are missing.
