Curtis Verdun (Native American/American, b. 1962). "Red Interlude" oil on canvas, 2004. Signed in lower left and on wood of verso with title and year. An energetic painting by American artist Curtis Verdun titled "Red Interlude" featuring freely painted layers of thick impasto rendering a vibrant composition in blended hues of umber, white, cobalt, scarlet, orange, crimson, gray, sienna, and ochre. The oldest of three artist brothers, Curtis Verdun is an abstract and portrait artist deep in the bayou country of Southeast Louisiana. He is primarily a self-taught artist and inspired by the bayou area's rich culture and unique landscape. Born a Native American Indian of the Lafourche Band of Biloxi-Chitimacha, Curtis feels that this heritage has had a strong influence on his work and his outlook on life. Through abstract and non-figurative painting, Curtis feels he has a newfound opportunity for greater creativity and artistic expression, stating "All great art is due to the abstraction process." Size: 16" W x 20" H (40.6 cm x 50.8 cm)
Artist Statement: "Whether it's an inspirational scene of my native South Louisiana homeland or an entirely abstract vision, my expansive canvases embody and present a heightened depiction of my subjects. When I paint, I feel compelled to create images that transcend simple objective representations. I aim rather to identify, assemble, reconstruct and amplify the core essence of each particular scene or imaginary thought. My style is largely defined by my use of painting knives, my fingers and other objects. I don't actually paint but rather build and mold my images to recreate my vision on canvas. This provides greater control and freedom and allows for a more profound and intimate visual message."
From the artist's website: "As a certain kind of inspiration emerges and his wild-side takes over, Verdun redirects his creative talents to producing various abstract oil paintings. Some of these have a hint of Expressionism while some are more surreal. You might imagine that this work is entirely unrelated to painting realism, but it isn't. The same requirement for precise execution also applies to the seemingly random strokes of many abstract paintings.
You would think it didn't matter as much, but every nuance of each passage is vital to the feel, depth, and character of the completed image. So, for this reason, Curtis realizes that much of his artistic talents can be attributed to the intensive training he has received while painting numerous portraits over the years."
