Description:

Ancient Egypt, probably Hellenistic or Ptolemaic periods, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A simple, elegant, modern necklace design, with a thin chain made of several strands of narrow silver wire holding a square glass locket, with simple silver border. Inside the locket, occupying one half of the space is a fragment of papyrus that has been written upon by hand. The script appears to be in Greek or maybe Coptic, giving this a later date; the layers of folded papyus are clear to see, which is evidence of how this versatile material was reused over time. Size: 16.75" L (42.5 cm); locket measures 1.5" L x 1.5" W (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: Wearable, one-of-a-kind custom-designed ancient art jewelry from Muzeion Gallery, Dallas, TX
