Lot 133A
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 600 to 900 CE. With modern stringing on brown leather, and subtle gold wire and hook, this gorgeous pearly chert eccentric flint takes center stage on this necklace. Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. This particular piece of chert glows a rich pink, purple, and cream. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. Size: 15.75" L (40 cm)
Provenance: Wearable, one-of-a-kind custom-designed ancient art jewelry from Muzeion Gallery, Dallas, TX
