Description:

Oceania, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Massim Culture, ca. early 20th century CE. An endearing pig statue, carved from hardwood and pigmented with lime, rendered with soft contours and whimsical detail. Spiraled and curvilinear designs trace the surface, etched in low relief and pigmented to contrast subtly with the warm brown tone of the wood. Though originally created for sale to Western visitors, such pieces echo the cultural richness of their place of origin. Pig figures held symbolic value in the region and were often associated with exchange, wealth, or gift-giving. Size: 8.75" L x 3" W x 3.75" H (22.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 9.5 cm)
