Description:

Ancient Mediterranean, Cyprus, Cypro-Archaic I period, ca. 750 to 600 BCE. A handsome bichrome ware jar dating to the Cypro-Archaic I period, hand-built with a rounded ovoid body, short ring foot, broad mouth, and a pair of sturdy strap handles rising from the shoulder to the thickened rim. The surface is richly decorated with encircling bands in iron-red and black slip, the defining aesthetic of bichrome ware ceramics. These linear decorations - precisely applied in horizontal groupings around the shoulder, body, and neck - offer a rhythmic contrast to the vessel's warm terracotta base, accentuating its form with bold simplicity. This type of jar was likely used for storing wine, oil, or grain, and may have played a role in both domestic and ceremonial contexts. Bichrome ware emerged as a dominant ceramic tradition in Cyprus during the Iron Age and reflects both local stylistic development and ongoing Aegean and Levantine influences. Size: 11.1" Diameter x 11.8" H (28.2 cm x 30 cm)

The careful symmetry, restrained palette, and harmonious decoration of this piece speak to the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Cypriot potters in this period. The surface bears mineral accretions from long-term burial, lending further authenticity and archaeological character to this elegant vessel.
