Description:

Near East, Cyprus, found in the Holy Land, late Cypriot I, ca. 1600 to 1050 BCE. A delicate "bilbil" juglet with a bulbous, apple-shaped body, a slender cylindrical neck, a strap handle, and a flared rim. A molded double line wraps around the neck where it meets the handle and a similar motif flows from the bottom of the neck to the foot down the opposite side of the bilbil from the handle. Ceramic items manufactured in Cyprus were exported in huge numbers to the Holy Land, and this piece was probably used there. Size: 3" W x 6.1" H (7.6 cm x 15.5 cm)

See an almost identical example at the Eretz Israel Museum, Tel Aviv (Item Code: ICMS_EIM_MHP98.60).

Provenance: private collection of a Munich priest (F.-X.E.); acquired in 1985 from Samir Kando Antiques Shop, Bethlehem
