Description:

Ancient Mediterranean / Near East, Cypriot, Late Bronze Age, 1600 to 1000 BCE. A shallow stone dish carved from a single piece of basalt with a low rim. A pair of large notches on both sides of the exterior indicating the use of a lid with this stone vessel - perhaps for using when cooking or heating. A similar example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection and they suggest this may have been a type of mortar, for preparing foods, dyes, ointments, and fragrances. Whatever the use- this example is intact and in superb condition! Size: 10" Diameter x 2" H (25.4 cm x 5.1 cm)

A similar example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, please see their website and accession number: 74.51.5054.
