Description:

Ancient Iron Age, Greece/ Cyprus, ca. 1100 to 75 BCE. The pottery created on the island of Cyprus in the prehistoric era was in a word imaginative. The ancients created lively forms and refined decoration, and this platter is no exception. A gorgeous terracotta platter from ancient Cyprus, its form comprised of a wide, shallow bowl with twin applied handles upon a narrow foot, the hand painted decoration comprised of linear, geometric, and more organic motifs in hues of chocolate brown, red, and black. Cypriot pottery was usually created on the wheel, and this example displays copious, concentric wheel marks all along the contours of the shallow platter. A striking ceramic work, impressive for its technical mastery and lovely aesthetic. Size: 11" L x 1.25" W (27.9 cm x 3.2 cm)
