Description:

Ivory Coast. Fine*gunye ge* mask, carved with a high, rounded forehead and large circular eye openings framed by raised rims. The face is animated by projecting lips pierced with a central opening. Multiple perforations along the perimeter, as well as at the forehead and beside the mouth, indicate former attachment points for a full fiber and textile costume. Rich dark brown patina with light deposits, burnished smooth patina on interior. Hairline crack along mouth and nose, scratch along forehead, minor losses at rim. Custom base. The overall form is spare yet powerful. Gunye ge masks are associated with Dan masquerades that embody spirit presences and play important roles in social regulation, entertainment, and ritual performance, appearing during public gatherings to convey authority, discipline, and communal values. Size: 7-7/8"H.
