Description:

Daniel Beugin (French, d. 2023). "Vanities Archaiques" acrylic painting on canvas, 1986. Signed at lower right. Signed, titled, and dated on verso. In this enigmatic surrealist canvas, Daniel Beugin conjures a theatrical dreamscape where ancient memory and modern melancholy collide. Titled "Vanities Archaiques" ("Archaic Vanities"), the 1986 painting stages a haunting interplay of armor, architecture, and symbolism. A headless suit of black armor sprouts a blooming orchid in place of a face, its delicate petals at once suggestive of rebirth and absurdity. Behind it looms a crumbling Roman-style triumphal arch, while chess pieces march ominously toward a central abyss cut into the checkered floor. A single disembodied eye floats at the bottom of the composition, unblinking, as though bearing silent witness to the decay of empires and the fragility of illusion. Size: 35" W x 45.75" H (88.9 cm x 116.2 cm)

Beugin, a French surrealist shaped by African influences, emerged prominently in the 1980s, exhibiting widely across France and abroad in cities such as Boston, Hong Kong, and Brussels. He was awarded the French Symbolism Prize in 1987, and his oeuvre - marked by bold imagination and existential symbolism - entered numerous private collections. After a 25-year hiatus, Beugin returned to painting late in life with renewed vision. "Vanities Archaiques" stands as a quintessential work of his early output, capturing the psychological complexity and theatrical elegance for which his art became known.
