Magna Graecia, Daunian, ca. 6th to 3rd century BCE. A ceramic vessel in the form of a duck, its tail serving as the pouring spout with drilled holes just above to strain contents. Opposite this is an applied long neck and head, the visage delineated with appliqued round eyes and a pointed beak. Its high, flat strap handle is also oftentimes seen on Daunian kyathos forms. The surface is skillfully painted with red and black stylized geometric motifs. A sweet example! Size: 6" W x 5" H (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
As early as the 6th century BCE, Daunia was an extremely wealthy region as is evidenced by the rich grave goods from the urban centers of Canosa, Arpi, and Salapia among others. Daunian pottery, while somewhat more rustic compared to black glazed and red figure South Italic Greek pottery, is characterized by voluminous rounded forms with geometric and linear patterns in earthen tones as we see in this intriguing example.
