Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl with a round but stable base, convex walls, and a thin rim overhanging the deep basin. The highly burnished exterior is covered with a red-slipped ground, and vibrant orange, white, yellow, and black pigments are applied on top. The front features an abstract anthropomorphic face with protruding ears, a perky nose, semicircular eyes with arching brows above and scarification lines below, and an ovoid mouth, all beneath a black headband bedecked with yellow circles. Disembodied heads are a theme in Pre-Columbian indigenous Andean art, leading many to believe that they correspond to the taking of trophy heads from enemies. Size: 6.1" W x 3.55" H (15.5 cm x 9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Florida, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, USA; ex-Eugene Lions collection, Geneve, Switzerland, collected from 1960s to 1980s
