"Plate 41 - Koum Ombrou (Ombros.). (1, 2, 3) Plan, Coupe, et Elevation du Grand Temple. (4) Bas-Relief du Meme Temple. (5, 6) Details d'Hieroglyphes" and "Plate 59 - Koum Ombrou (Ombros.). Plan General des Ruines et des Environs." Two engravings from "Description de l'Egypte: ou, Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'expedition de l'armee francaise" Vol. 1. Second Edition, 1821. Each has blind stamp of C.L.F. Panckoucke at upper right. Two finely detailed copperplate engravings from "Description de l'Egypte" depicting the celebrated site of Kom Ombo (ancient Ombos), a Ptolemaic temple complex in Upper Egypt dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-headed god Haroeris. Plate 41 presents a cross-section and elevation of the monumental temple facade, with carefully rendered columns covered in hieroglyphs, a view of the entrance portico, a relief panel from the sanctuary, and examples of hieroglyphic inscriptions. Size (both about the same): 23.6" W x 18" H (59.9 cm x 45.7 cm)
While Plate 59 displays a bird's eye plan of the temple ruins within their broader setting along the Nile, with the ancient enclosure walls and the spatial arrangement of the sanctuary indicated. These engravings are part of the monumental Napoleonic-era project, the "Description de l'Egypte," which combined the work of scholars, artists, and engineers who accompanied Napoleon's 1798-1801 campaign. The project resulted in one of the most ambitious and influential publications of the nineteenth century, marking the foundation of modern Egyptology. Both engravings exemplify the precision and artistry of the expedition's documentation, capturing the grandeur of the Kom Ombo temple complex before later restorations and changes.
