Lot 93
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. An amazingly details figure that gives us a good idea of what an elite member of this society would have worn. The figure has a detailed face, with what appears to be a labret; they wear a massive headdress over a bulbous, elongated skull - possibly referring to the practice of skull shaping known from this area. Banded leggings and a poncho with a huge necklace and various appliques that match those on the headdress complete the look. These appliques probably represent hammered gold ornaments that would have been worn by elites in the society. Headdresses, jewelry, and styles of dress were all signifiers of rank and social status within many pre-Columbian societies; to a member of the Jamacoaque, this figure probably had even deeper meaning, describing who the figure was. Size: 3.3" W x 6.3" H (8.4 cm x 16 cm)
