Description:

E. Adele Schluge. "Lion and Lamb Allegory" acrylic paint on wood, 1982. Signed and dated on verso. A serene painting and early work by American Folk Artist E. Adele Schluge, depicting the timeless biblical allegory of the lion and the lamb. Rendered in a beautifully naive style with simplified forms and a peaceful landscape, this artwork embodies the powerful message of harmony and reconciliation. Evoking the spirit of Edward Hicks' renowned "Peaceable Kingdom" series, Schluge's piece offers a more intimate and focused expression of this enduring symbol. Size: 13.75" W x 11" H (34.9 cm x 27.9 cm)

Artist Statement: "For years, my artwork has reflected life on Indianapolis' East Side. My husband and I raised our four children in a turn-of-last-century home in historic Irvington, then took on the project of restoring an 1880's abandoned cottage in the Holy Cross neighborhood, closer to the urban center. Scenes of children, holidays celebrated, neighborhood homes, gardens, urban streets, Indiana fields, churches and interiors, travels throughout our beautiful country have inspired my work. My spiritual journey has been reflected in biblical narratives and visions of life and culture through the lens of faith.

Studying art at Indiana University only helped to direct me away from the mainstream of the art scene and to my own, rather unschooled methods. Probably a blessing, the lack of technical direction enabled me to explore my own style, naive as it may be. My original paintings have been purchased over the years by the Museum of American Folk Art Museum shop in New York City; the Indianapolis Museum of Art Alliance shop; antique, design, interior and gift shops as well as individuals from New York to California, and the U.K, France, Canada and Spain."
