Description:

United States, after 1827. First-size Peace Medallion probably created between 1827 and 1849. Using the rare 76 mm dies that were soon replaced by a 55mm format due to the fragile nature of the larger die. On the obverse is a portrait of John Adams in profile, facing right, inscribed "John Adams President of The U.S. A.D. 1797. Reverse shows crossed pipes (one typical Indian Peace Pipe, other a Hudson Bay type bronze Axe pipe. Reverse inscribed "Peace and Friendship." This medal is holed at the top for suspension as is typical with flattened "A" created by suspension hole. No Indian Peace Medals with president John Adam's likeness were issued during his term as president so we can assume this example was struck around the time of his son's presidency between 1825 and 1829. Size: 2.875" W (7.3 cm) and weighs 220 grams. XRF shows the composition of this medal at 50% silver and 50% copper.
