Description:

North America, United States, ca. early to mid-19th century CE. A functioning tobacco scale with a hollow wooden body filled with iron mechanical components used to operate the scale. A petite interior tab rests beneath the wooden weight platform and raises the scale 'cup' that is suspended with iron chains. Tobacco scales like this example were an integral part of the early American frontier since tobacco was one of its most highly profitable resources. Several numbers including 904, 908, and 928 are stamped on and around the vertical scale wall, and the wooden components are painted with a forest green pigment. Size (w/ scale platform): 25" L x 11" W x 14.625" H (63.5 cm x 27.9 cm x 37.1 cm)

  • Condition: Suspended scale plate repaired from two pieces with two additional slats underneath for reinforcement. Minor abrasions and nicks to weight platform, scale plate, and body, with light encrustations to some iron components, and light fading to original pigmentation. Scale still functions as intended. Nice remains of original pigment.
