North America, United States, ca. first half of the 19th century CE. A hand-carved walking spinning wheel (also known as a great wheel) of an enormous form with a slanted base supported by three legs, a vertical wheel axle, a huge drive wheel, and an accelerated head (also known as a "Minor's head") next to a whorl and between a pair of vertical maiden rods. Models like this were intended to be used standing up or sitting down and did not operate via a treadle. Size: 70" L x 61" H (177.8 cm x 154.9 cm).
