Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, United States, ca. early 19th century CE. A small document sized storage chest made of wooden panels covered in cowhide, brass rivet tacks, lid handle, and a front lock. These storage trunks are often called "document boxes" - perfect for overnight travel by wagon or stagecoach, and to store personal items that needed safe keeping- such as heirlooms, dowries, and documents. A few tiny patches of hair remain on the hide cover, and this hair-on hide trunk style was popular in the late 1700s and into the 1800s, until falling out of favor in the 1840s.
