Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. early 20th century CE. An expressive wooden festival mask with painted motifs and goat hair facial details. The visage represents an older man with a surprised look - bulging eyes, furrowed brow and slightly open mouth to reveal two large gap teeth. The lack of teeth might be from years of chewing betel nuts. On his brow is a hemispherical third eye with gold and black pigments. The top of his head is caped with a striped headdress. The skin is painted a dark brown, and white hair is attached as his mustache and eyebrows. Masks like this example have been worn for centuries during dramatic dances enacted for festivals or other celebrations that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and other myths. Size: 8.5" L x 5.675" W (21.6 cm x 14.4 cm)
