Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, early 20th century CE. A finely painted Hopi pottery bowl, its interior adorned with bold black and red geometric motifs against a warm orange ground. The design features a dynamic interplay of curving scrolls, stepped forms, and radiating lines, elements deeply rooted in Hopi symbolism and often associated with water, rain, and fertility. The flaring rim provides an elegant frame for the composition, while the exterior surface, left largely undecorated, reveals traces of wear and mineral deposits attesting to age and use. This vessel belongs to the longstanding Hopi tradition of ceramic artistry, which reached a revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries under the influence of Nampeyo and other potters of First Mesa. Size: 10.1" Diameter x 4.9" H (25.7 cm x 12.4 cm)

Such bowls were not merely utilitarian but also carried cultural and spiritual significance, used in both daily life and ceremonial contexts. The balance of form, painted decoration, and earthen tonality exemplifies the resilience of Hopi aesthetic traditions into the modern era.
