Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast (USA and Canada), Native Alaskan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A lengthy, hand-carved wooden shaman's rattle and whistle which produces a bright sound when shook. The bar-shaped handle has a discoid end and is wrapped with twisted, resin-covered reed strands. Several small beads are housed within a cylindrical rattle body - painted with red, green, and yellow banded designs - with a small stained whistle mouthpiece protruding from the top. The rattle body is comprised of two halves which, when sealed together, house the rattle beads as well as the body of the whistle. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 10.25" H (26 cm); 11.55" H (29.3 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use, small hairline fissures and chips to rattle body, fading to pigmentation, and light discoloration across most surfaces. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas, and nice light-brown patina throughout. Rattle still functions. Whistle produced high-pitched sound when blown into.
