Western Europe, Portugal, ca. early 20th century CE. An elegant wood and iron ox or cattle yoke, skillfully hand-carved to display an intricate openwork design of floral and geometric motifs with a cross at the center. The complex example features curved sides and a pointed top with a cross at the center of the base. Sheets of iron protect the peripheries, while an iron hook extends from the center. A set of 4 spikes protrude from the base. This yoke would have been used to harness 2 oxen together to pull a plough, cart, or other piece of farm machinery. Yokes like this example are distinctive to northern Portugal and often show regional variations. Size: 43.5" W x 23.1" H (110.5 cm x 58.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
