Native American / First Nations, Northern United States / Canada, Great Lakes Region & Midwest, Winnebago / Ojibwe, ca. early 20th century CE. A hide bag with beadwork across both sides, the front panel covered in thousands of seed beads arranged as flowers and leaves on a white ground. The edges are hemmed in black velvet with green yarn tassels at the bottom. The interior is lined with a cotton cloth and a drawstring closure. Size: 19" L x 11" W (48.3 cm x 27.9 cm)

Inside the bag is a paper about the life and collection of Os-Ke-Non-Ton (Oskenonton) (1888 to 1955)- it would appear this is perhaps from his collection. Os-Ke-Non-Ton was a talented singer and performer from the First Nations Mohawk tribe, during his travels he studied other Native tribes music and cultures, collecting items as he traveled across the USA and Canada.

  • Condition: Staining and discoloration to hide Chips to red tassel beads. Some fraying and losses to beadwork on center of flower panel and peripheries but the majority of beading is intact and excellent. Tearing to interior cotton liner. Overall good condition. Inside is a paper about Os-Ke-Non-Ton.
