Africa, Mali, Southeast area, near Dida, Bamana, Bambara tribe, early 20th century. A finely carved divination clapper of a traditional abstract female form comprised of a head carved in the round at the upper end with an elaborately styled coiffure, thick-lidded eyes, a pierced nose and pierced ears for suspending ornaments - as well as an oblong body with protruding conical breasts and an extensive incised decorative program of cross-hatched and geometric motifs. A very nice example with a lustrous patina. Size: 9.75" L x 10" H (24.8 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, acquired in the early 1970's

  • Condition: Nice age patina. Small chip to back of head beneath lobed coiffure. Area between the breasts shows some abrasion; this may have occurred during the carving. Otherwise excellent.
