Description:

Southern Africa, Angola, Chokwe peoples, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A lovely depiction of an anthropomorphic standing female. This example sports a conical base which tapers gradually to a tubular torso, with pendulous breasts and a stylized navel in the center, and one arm hanging from a sloped shoulder. A thick neck supports a roughly-triangular head detailed with almond-shaped eyes, a thin mouth, and four sets of facial scarification marks. A three-lobed coiffure caps her broad brow line, and a wonderful brown patina envelops most exterior surfaces. Size: 11.375" H (28.9 cm).

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
