Description:

Western Africa, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire, Dan / Kran peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden face mask with distinctively exaggerated cheeks, a puffy forehead, and a prominent nose. Perhaps of passport size, this mask features an abstract anthropomorphic face, perhaps an anthropomorphic characterization of the Bagle, an entertainer spirit who performs a myriad of dances and theatrical performances; the articulated jaw would aid in its performative capabilities. Size: 2.7" L x 3.5" W x 6" H (6.9 cm x 8.9 cm x 15.2 cm); 8.875" H (22.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Howard Feldman collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
