Western Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. early 20th century CE. A slender wooden figure standing on short legs, with an overhanging chest and shoulders, as well as a prominent overhanging phallus. The head is dome-shaped, mimicking the phallic form, with low relief features and small, drilled eyes. There are remains of encrusted black pigment over much of the surface. The Dogon are well known for their masks and wooden figurative art. A figure like this one may represent an ancestor, whose worship is a major component of Dogon religion. Size: 2.5" W x 14.45" H (6.4 cm x 36.7 cm); 15.55" H (39.5 cm) on included custom stand.
