Description:

West Africa, Guinea and Liberia, Loma (also Looma, Lorma, Loghoma, or Toma) peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A petite passport maskette carved from soft wood that exhibits a highly stylized anthropomorphic countenance. The face presents horizontal triangular eyes that flank the top of a bar-shaped nose, cupped ears, and parted lips, with incised X-shaped motifs carved into the cheeks and across the forehead. Beneath the chin is a plaited raffia fiber beard that terminates in a frilled bunch. Size: (mask): 2.375" W x 3" H (6 cm x 7.6 cm); (mask w/ beard): 9.75" H (24.8 cm); 10.7" H (27.2 cm) on included custom stand.
