Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Mossi Tribe, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden child's doll known as a biiga (literally "child") standing atop an integral circular platform. The slender body exhibits a slightly distended abdomen beneath a pair of conical breasts, and the narrow neck rests atop the slender shoulders. The abstract anthropomorphic head showcases a lengthy braid draped in front of the face as well as registers of fineline incisions along either side of the crested coiffure. Fine patina has developed across the entire figure. Size: 2.1" W x 12.4" H (5.3 cm x 31.5 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.
