Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio / Anaang people, ca. early 20th century CE. A charming, hand-carved, standing wooden figure of a male presenting a classic Ibibio-style face with bold features, embellished with bright violet blue pigment below the eyes and red pigment on the mouth, topped by a grand coiffure of high openwork spiraled locks (resembling the curled horns of a Bighorn sheep - or more accurately, given this piece's place of origin, more akin to the horns of a Barbary sheep). He stands on spread legs, with a nude torso revealing a pronounced navel, only wearing a layered waist wrap/skirt colored with red, white and blue pigments, and holds a head or face mask in his left hand. Most likely a shrine or ceremonial figure, an intriguing example from Western Africa! Size: 13.875" H (35.2 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
