West Africa, Benin, ca. early 20th century CE. A dark, hard wood bocio (bochio) figure - a very powerful, personal object. They are made in secret, for purposes known only to their creator - protection, revenge, personal success, etc. This example represents a standing woman, nude, with delineated breasts and emphasized genitalia. With hands pointing toward her womb, she stares ahead, those deep-set eyes focused in concentration. Size: 5" W x 16.45" H (12.7 cm x 41.8 cm); height on stand: 17.25" (43.8 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
