**First Time At Auction**

South Africa, Botswana / Namibia, Himba people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a fine example of a traditional apron style of a glass beaded and leather skirt. The leather waist strap has dozens of narrow leather strips sewn to the edge that dangle freely downwards and dispersed throughout are threads strung with the beads. The beading is a colorful assortment of petite glass seed beads in opaque and semi translucent hues. These types of leather beaded tassels were usually be worn over a larger cloth covering that would be tied around the waist as ornamentation. Size: 9" L x 6" W (22.9 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Collected with late husband Edward. S. Ross, with the California Academy of Sciences collected 1970's and 1980's

  • Condition: Desiccation of leather with some fissures. Heavy mineral deposits throughout, but strips are intact and securely attached to waist band. Beads are intact and very good.
