West Africa, Cameroon, Bangwa culture, ca. early 20th century CE. A wood shrine figure depicting a naked pregnant woman with a large head, posed in a crouched birthing position. Dark patina covers the original exposed wood. The Bangwa peoples live in chiefdoms in the Cameroon grassfields and make wooden representations of ancestors, spirits, and famous royal figures. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.9" W x 12.25" H (9.9 cm x 31.1 cm); height on stand: 12.7" (32.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
