Description:

West Africa, Cameroon, Bamun people, ca. early 20th century. Made from a heavy, tight-grained wood, an attractive openwork stool created by the Bamun peoples. The form is comprised of a circular seat and a ring-shaped base with four anthropomorphic figures serving as supports, each one standing with outspread legs and upraised arms to 'hold' the seat. Further contributing to the aesthetic of the piece, the perimeters of the seat and ring base are incised with an attractive zigzag pattern. An excellent example with a nice darkened and varied age patina that has developed over time. Size: 10.25" W x 12.25" H (26 cm x 31.1 cm)

Stools created by the cultures of Cameroon are usually related to important chiefs and kings who demonstrated their might via fine objects used during significant ceremonies. Stools like this example traditionally have been amongst their most important prestigious objects.
