Description:

Europe, probably the United Kingdom, ca. early 20th century CE. A delightful, fine silver cup with lightly incised motifs around its exterior, including a charming dog. The dog is shown stepping lightly down a path, wearing a large collar, inside an encircling border that reads, "FIDELIS INSTAR HOMINEM", which translates roughly to "man's faithful companion" - which any man or woman who has loved a dog knows is true! On the other side, in a similar border, is a man holding a book and a tall pike, with the caption, "REGIO HAVT RELIGIO" , which translates roughly to "land before allegiance to the gods". Around these two portraits are symmetrical floral patterns. Stamped on the bottom are the letters "PS" and a pineapple, which may be from the Ellis-Barker Silver Company, of Birmingham, who used a pineapple symbol from 1906 to 1912 to mark their wares. Size: 2.75" W x 3.45" H (7 cm x 8.8 cm); 144.6 grams

Provenance: private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930s, Bel-Air, California, USA
