Description:

Africa, Ethiopian, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden headrest made from a single piece of wood. The conical base flares outward in the middle and tapers to a narrow neck that supports a curved cradle shape where the owner's neck would rest. Incised carvings encircle almost the entirety of the base and neck area with wonderful fretted borders and grooves. The underside and top of the area of the cradle is free of carvings and has a smooth lustrous patina. Headrests like this were used for elevating the neck and preserving elaborate hairstyles during sleep. Size: 5.625" W x 6.625" H (14.3 cm x 16.8 cm)
