Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A finely hand-carved wooden male figure with delineated legs, an elongated barrel-shaped torso, and lengthy neck leading to a rounded head. The sensitively carved facial features include almond-shaped eyes underneath a thin browline, gaping pursed lips, a prominent triangular nose, and a pair of muted ears. The figure's right arm is raised to its side in an authoritative manner, with his left arm running parallel his body resting pointedly at his hip. The nude figure's backside is just as illustrative, with defined buttocks, hamstrings, calf, and a defined spine. This figure is known as a "bateba ti puo," or "dangerous bateba," not because it is meant to harm, but rather protect. Figures like this - also referred to as "bateba duntundara" - are typically placed in or near building entrances to safeguard those inside from malevolent forces such as disease, evil spirits, or witchcraft. Size: 4" W x 7" H (10.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
