Western Africa, Mali and Burkina Faso, Bamana (also Bambara) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance crest for a helmet (known as a sogo ni kun) in the form of a stylized standing antelope. The creature stands with delineated legs atop an integral ovoid plinth and has a stocky body and a lengthy neck, and the triangular head is accentuated with petite brass panels, incised motifs, and a pair of spiraling horns. Chi Wara (also Chi Wara, Ci Wara, or Tji-Wara) are meant to depict a divine being that is half human and half antelope. This being taught humanity how to cultivate the land and was honored by the Bamana ever after. Size: 7.5" L x 3.5" W x 14.7" H (19 cm x 8.9 cm x 37.3 cm)
