Description:

Oceania, French Polynesia, Marquesas Islands, Enata peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A stunning club of a utilitarian form with a handle carved from caramel-hued hardwood. The curving handle bears several openwork gripping holes in-between the limbs of two seated abstract figures, each with a tall head and concentric ovoid eyes. The figures hold their arms out atop their thighs, with expressive faces flanked with petite ears, and a serrated zigzag groove along the midsection. A third head on top bears a hollow cavity into which the end of a round-faced pounding tool is secured with several strands of braided rattan fiber. The rounded form of the head as well as the intricacy of the handle suggest this club was used for smoothing or pounding certain substances rather than for warfare. Size: 6.7" W x 26.125" H (17 cm x 66.4 cm); 26.7" H (67.8 cm) on included custom stand.
