Description:

Central Asia, northeastern India/Burma, Naga people, ca. early 20th century CE. A fascinating object, a woven black rattan basket decorated with two halves of a boar's lower jawbone, a monkey skull, a shell, a wooden anthropomorphic head, red-black goat hair, and two long, black fur-covered tails. The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this basket was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. Baskets like this one were made by men in order to be used as part of headhunting, and each is unique. Size: 15.5" W x 12.25" H (39.4 cm x 31.1 cm)
