Description:

Native American, southwestern United States, Navajo tribe, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A finely-constructed saddle blanket composed of tightly-woven natural fibers in hues of burgundy, cream, espresso, citrine, and wheat. The rectangular blanket has two primary panels which are formed as one contiguous textile, one with a polychrome diamond motif, and one with an orange-and-black checkerboard pattern. Saddle blankets like this example are laid directly on the horse's back before a saddle is secured as this helps to cushion the saddle as well as protect the horse's back. Size: 46.75" L x 36" W (118.7 cm x 91.4 cm).
