Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A wonderful mask of an oblong form made from a carved Ganoderma mushroom, a species that grows on wood. Made by the indigenous Rai peoples, the mask has ovoid eye holes, a protruding triangular nose, a gaping mouth, and puffy cheeks. Masks of this type were primarily worn during ceremonial and ritual performances and were thought to cure the sick. They were also kept in the rafters of village huts to ward against evil spirits or other malevolent forces. Size: 6.9" W x 6.375" H (17.5 cm x 16.2 cm).
