Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask with an expressive countenance comprised of large oval-shaped eyes with delineated irises and pupils painted white and openwork below for the wearer to see through, an arched bas relief browline, a protruding upturned nose, an oversized bulging forehead, and an articulated jaw revealing carved teeth that have been embellished with white kaolin-derived pigment. In addition, perforations along the periphery were used for further ornamentation (perhaps once trimmed with raffia) or attachment to a costume. Size: 7.75" L x 6.875" W x 11.375" H (19.7 cm x 17.5 cm x 28.9 cm); 16.625" H (42.2 cm) on included custom stand.
