Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, early 20th century CE. A standing human figure carved from wood and retaining much of its original white kaolin pigment. The figure has a detailed face with small features and a distinctive, asymmetrical hairstyle above well-defined ears. The body, in contrast, is relatively simple, with a wide, elongated neck and simple shapes for arms and legs. This type of figure was made to be placed on a personal altar. Size: 7" W x 20" H (17.8 cm x 50.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
