Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A finely carved, miniature wooden paddle, with one face in the form of a sharp-toothed animal with ears - perhaps a bear - and the other face in the form of a bird with a long beak. Each is incised, with a huge eye and a highly stylized body given abstract, geometric textures before the paddle narrows to its handle. The paddle form recalls the importance of watercraft, particularly kayaks and canoes, to traditional indigenous lifestyles in this region. Size: 2.75" W x 14.3" H (7 cm x 36.3 cm)

Provenance: private Szurleys collection, Polson, Montana, USA, aquired at auction; ex private Gertrude Pearson collection
