Western Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance crest which was worn as a headdress. The crest features two stylized anthropomorphic face masks with pointed noses and puckered lips with a diamond-shaped separation bar in-between. White pigment provides the ground atop which black and red pigmentation is applied, and several perforations around each mask and central bar enable the attachment of additional ornamentation or costuming. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 4" W x 16.9" H (10.2 cm x 42.9 cm).

  • Condition: Small nicks to masks, separation bar, and peripheries, with chipping and fading to pigmentation, and wear to some raised areas, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
