Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Iatmul peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful face mask carved from wood that exhibits a convex form with a pair of red-painted eyes beneath thick, sweeping brows that flank the crested, curved nose. The petite mouth features upturned corners in a slight grin above a sharply pointed chin, and the brow is centered with a vertical crest. Areas of pale-yellow pigment are interspersed throughout the layers of light brown and dark gray hues, providing a pop of bright color. Size: 5.6" W x 11" H (14.2 cm x 27.9 cm); 16.6" H (42.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Small chips and losses along peripheries, with stabilization to one hairline fissure stemming above front of left eye. Nicks and abrasions to face, pigment, peripheries, and verso, with small chips in some areas, and fading to areas of pigment. Nice remains of pigment throughout.
